Never Love a Stranger (1958)

Last Updated: August 2025

Frankie Kane (John Drew Barrymore) is raised in a Catholic orphanage in New York City, where his quick wit and street-smart attitude often set him apart from the other boys. During his teenage years, he comes to the defense of a young Jewish boy, Martin Cabell (Steve McQueen), after witnessing him being bullied. This act sparks a deep and lasting friendship between the two, despite their different backgrounds. Through his visits to the Cabell home, Frankie meets and forms a romantic attachment to Julie (Lita Milan), the family’s maid, whose warmth and charm make a lasting impression on him. As Frankie spends more time with Martin and Julie, he begins to feel a sense of belonging that he has never known—until a startling revelation changes everything.
