Scary NYC Movies for Halloween

If you have not been invited to a Halloween party this year, perhaps a night in with a scary movie would suffice, and in keeping with a New York theme, otsoNY’s film archives are literally littered with a variety of chilling tales of suspense, murder and mystery.

The Sentinel (1977)


Film: The Sentinel

Alison Parker (Cristina Raines), a fashion model moves into a house inhabited by a blind priest. She begins having strange physical problems as well as trouble sleeping at night combined with nasty flashbacks of her attempted suicide. She complains to the real estate agent of the noise caused by her strange neighbours, but finds out that the house is only occupied by the priest and herself, and ultimately discovers that she has been put in the house for a reason.

Rosemary's Baby (1968)


Film: Rosemary's Baby

Rosemary (Mia Farrow) and Guy Woodhouse (John Cassavetes) move into an apartment in a building with a bad reputation. They discover that their neighbours are a very friendly elderly couple named Roman and Minnie Castevet, and Guy begins to spend a lot of time with them. Strange things start to happen: a woman Rosemary meets in the washroom dies a mysterious death, Rosemary has strange dreams and hears strange noises and Guy becomes remote and distant. Then Rosemary falls pregnant and begins to suspect that her neighbours have special plans for her child.

The Exorcist (1973)


Film: The Exorcist

Something beyond evil is happening in a little girl's room. Regan (Linda Blair) has brutally changed both in the way she looks and the way she acts, with violent outbursts on everyone who comes in contact with her. Her worried mother gets in contact with a priest who comes to the conclusion that Regan is possessed. The top priest who can deal with an exorcism, Father Merrin, is called in to help save Regan from the demon inside her.

Angel Heart (1987)


Film: Angel Heart

Small time New York City gumshoe Harry Angel (Mickey Rourke) is hired through a law firm by a mysterious man named Louis Cyphre (Robert De Niro). Cyphre tells Harry that choosing him as the private investigator for this case was by no accident despite Harry not knowing who Cyphre is or in turn Cyphre not directly stating why he chose Harry. The case is to locate a man by the name of Johnny Favorite. As Harry progresses through the case, he doesn't quite trust Cyphre as every step Harry takes leads to people angry about his questions. Johnny's associates are highly populated by those into mysticism and particularly voodoo, which takes Harry to New Orleans. As Harry continues his investigation, one by one, the people he interviews turn up dead. Although Harry isn't sure if he wants to continue with the case, he does so if only to satisfy his own curiosity as to Johnny's whereabouts and why Cyphre wants to find him.

Maniac (1980)


Film: Maniac

Frank (Joe Spinell) misses his mother, who was killed in a car accident years before. She was abusive to him, and made money selling her body, but Frank still misses her. He tries to keep her from leaving him, and reform her evil ways, by killing young women and putting their scalps on mannequins which he displays around his apartment. Photographer Anna (Caroline Munro) takes a picture of him in the park, and he pursues and befriends her. Is she the one he's been looking for or just another mommy wanna be?

Film: Friday the 13th Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan

The graduating class of the local high school is going on a luxury cruise with Jason Voorhees as a stowaway. The heroine Rennie Wickham believes she was almost drowned by Jason as a child. Jason eventually sinks the boat and kills many of the students on it, but many of them escape to Manhattan. A long battle with Jason ensues until Jason is washed away in the New York sewers by a midnight flooding of toxic waste.

Doppelganger (1993)


Film: Doppelganger

Holly Gooding (Drew Barrymore) moves from NYC to LA after a murder, in which she is implicated. She is followed by what is apparently her evil alter- ego. She moves into a room for rent by a writer, and he begins having an affair with her, but after some strange things happen, he's not so sure if the affair is with her or her doppelganger.

Julia (2014)


Film: Julia

Surviving after being brutally gang raped, nurse Julia Shames (Ashley C. Williams) signs up to a radical, unorthadox thearapy ran by a mysterious but powerful Dr. Sgundud. With help from Sadie, one of Sgundud’s “clients”, Julia becomes empowered as a woman and takes back her life as she gets revenge on the male species but is forbidden from seeking retribution against the culprits who actually harmed her.

The Bone Collector (1999)


Film: The Bone Collector

After an accident in a tunnel, forensics expert Lincoln Rhyme (Denzel Washington) is left as a quadriplegic who is able only to move his head and one finger. Setting his finger to a computer, he is able to manipulate his environment with the help of a loving nurse. Even so, fearing seizures that could leave him a vegetable, he plans his "transition" with the help of a hesitational doctor friend. That all changes when he is confronted with clues from a serial killer that obviously are pointed to forensics investigation. The case clearly re-invokes his interest in life. Quick thinking New York City cop Amelia Donaghy (Angelina Jolie) saves the evidence from first crime scene. Recognizing her talent for forensics, he brings her unwillingly into forensics detection. Through radio contact, she becomes his eyes and legs on the scene.

Dark Water (2005)


Film: Dark Water

Dahlia Williams (Jennifer Connelly) and her daughter Cecelia move into a rundown apartment on New York's Roosevelt Island. She is currently in midst of divorce proceedings and the apartment, though near an excellent school for her daughter, is all she can afford. From the time she arrives, there are mysterious occurrences and there is a constant drip from the ceiling in her daughter's bedroom. There are also the noises coming from the apartment directly above hers, though it would appear to be vacant. Is the apartment haunted or is there a simpler explanation?

End of Days (1999)

In 1979, an innocent newborn girl is secretly patronized by Satanists. Twenty years later, she has developed into a young woman, who is haunted by dreams about one strange man. Meanwhile, private security guard Jericho (Arnold Schwarzenegger) takes down an old and homeless priest, who tried to shoot Jericho's customer, a successful Wall Street Banker. What Jericho does not know is that Satan himself roams the Streets of New York in order to mate with the chosen girl. If he fails to do so in the last hour before the next millennium, his only chance to get out of his eternal prison is gone and he has to wait another thousand years. Now it is up to atheist Jericho to find the girl before Satan does and protect her from harm. But Jericho does not have a clue who he's up against.

New York postal worker Jacob Singer (Tim Robbins) is trying to keep his frayed life from unravelling. His days are increasingly being invaded by flashbacks to his first marriage, his now-dead son, and his tour of duty in Vietnam. Although his new wife Jezzie (Elizabeth Peña), tries to help Jacob keep his grip on sanity, the line btw reality and delusion is steadily growing more and more uncertain.

1408 (2007)


Film: 1408

1408 is about supernatural writer Mike Enslin (John Cusack), an author of two successful books on supernatural phenomena. As research for his latest book, Enslin is determined to check out the notorious room 1408 in a New York City hotel by personally staying as a guest in the fabled room. He believes that 1408 is just a myth perpetuated by stories and rumours that Enslin has collected for his past works. However, hotel manager Mr. Olin (Samuel L. Jackson) has strong objections to Enslin's stay and only warns him of possible danger to come. Enslin is determined to go anyway. But what Mike Enslin is about to experience is no myth, as 1408 truly is a room where the guests don't check out by noon.

Defence attorney Kevin Lomax (Keanu Reeves) has never lost one single case. Exposed (2016)


Film: Exposed

Detective Galban (Keanu Reeves), finds his partner and close friend, Detective Cullen murdered in an underground subway. On the hunt for the killer, Galban begins to suspect his partner may have been heavily involved in drug dealing and police corruption. As Galban investigates, people who knew Cullen, are conveniently found dead. The closer Galban gets to the truth, both Cullen's wife and his Lieutenant Christopher McDonald try to persuade him to back off, fearing his findings may discredit Cullen and expose corruption within the Police Department. Galban's only remaining lead is Isabel (Ana de Armas), a young, devout, Latino girl, who resides with her in-laws. Galban fears her life could be in jeopardy should he get too close to her. However, Isabel has recently experienced something not from this world, something mystical that she believes is truly a miracle. Not unlike Galban, Isabel is dealing with her own demons from the past; a past that just may lead them to the truth; in turn, bringing both some form of assurance.

After a horrific car accident, Anna (Christina Ricci) wakes up to find the local funeral director Eliot Deacon (Liam Neeson) preparing her body for her funeral. Eliot convinces her he has the ability to communicate with the dead and is the only one who can help her. Trapped inside the funeral home, with nobody to turn to except Eliot, Anna is forced to face her deepest fears and accept her own death. But Anna's grief-stricken boyfriend Paul (Justin Long) still can't shake the nagging suspicion that Eliot isn't what he appears to be. As the funeral nears, Paul gets closer to unlocking the disturbing truth, but it could be too late; Anna may have already begun to cross over the other side.

Panic Room (2002)


Film: Panic Room

After her divorce, Meg Altman (Jodie Foster) and her daughter Sarah (Kristen Stewart) move into an old-fashioned house with one very modern addition: a "panic room" which is virtually impossible to break into, designed for refuge during a home invasion. In their first night in the house a trio of thieves do break in and Meg and Sarah rush into the panic room. However, the intruders are looking for something inside the panic room, and given the recent move the room's hotline to the police hasn't been hooked up yet. Worse, Sarah is diabetic and the room doesn't contain any sugar.

Wait Until Dark (1967)


Film: Wait Until Dark

Susie's (Audrey Hepburn) husband is asked to hold a doll for a woman as they get off an airplane. She disappears. Mike (Richard Crenna) and Carlino (Jack Weston) are small time hoods who find the woman's body in Susie's apartment, placed there by her partner, Harry Rote. Susie's blindness is the key to them searching the apartment for the doll that contains smuggled drugs. Mike pretends to be an old friend of Susie's husband while her husband is away and together the crooks invent a story of a police investigation of her husband that only the discovery of the now missing doll can save him from. Rote is a killer, and his stalking of Susie becomes more and more obvious as the story unfolds, leaving us with the question, how does a blind woman defend herself?
