The Mysteries of Laura TV Show

19 November 2015

The Mysteries of Laura is a New York-based police procedural comedy-drama television series developed by Jeff Rake.

The series follows the life of Laura Diamond, a homicide detective with the New York Police Department, who balances her day job with her off-duty hours as a single mother to twin sons. Meanwhile she is trying to get Captain Jake Broderick, her soon-to-be-former-husband who is also her boss, to sign the divorce papers. At the end of the first season, Broderick was shot and grievously wounded during a convenience store robbery. He recovered, but at the beginning of the second season, the precinct has a new captain, Santiani, a stern, by-the-book taskmaster. Behind her back, Laura and the others deliberately mispronounce her name as ‘Santini’, an apparent reference to Robert Duvall's similar character in The Great Santini. Rather than transfer to another precinct, Broderick voluntarily takes a demotion to detective and partners with Laura, while Soto teams up with Bose, with whom he has begun a relationship. Her previous partner, Frankie Pulaski, was written out of the show after season one, presumably for budgetary reasons. The tone of the series was also altered, focusing on Laura's and Jake's sleuthing at the expense of the other characters and cutting back on the comedic elements, such as the rowdy behaviour of her kids and the playful banter among the cops.

Debra Messing stars as Detective Laura Diamond, with Josh Lucas as Captain Jake Broderick, Laura's former husband and her new boss. Laz Alonso plays Detective Billy Soto, and Laura's partner. Janina Gavankar is Detective Meredith Bose, whilst Max Jenkins is Max Carnegie, the precinct's intern. And finally, Meg Steedle plays Detective Francesca "Frankie" Pulaski.

The show is primarily filmed in New York City with the early episodes featuring the Brooklyn Bridge Park, the newly renovated Meatpacking District, Times Square and the West Village.
