Thanksgiving NYC Movies

14 November 2018

With just a week away from Thanksgiving, otsoNY considers some movies worth chilling out to, if the Macy’s Parade isn’t your thing.

Top of the list is the 1987 comedy classic “Planes, Trains and Automobiles” starring comic geniuses Steve Martin and John Candy as they attempt to make it home to their wives for Thanksgiving. Partly shot in New York City, the film that just doesn’t seem to age featured locations such Madison Avenue between East 54th and 55th streets, Park Avenue and the tall office block at 767 on Fifth Avenue.

If you’ve not over-eaten and there is still room for more, perhaps keeping it traditionally New York with the Woody Allen classic “Hannah and Her Sisters” where three successive family Thanksgiving dinners mark time for Hannah played by Mia Farrow, her younger sisters Lee played by Barbara Hershey and Holly played by Dianne Wiest and the men in their lives of which include Michael Caine, Max von Sydow and writer and director Woody Allen.

If you’d prefer something a bit more independently made, “Pieces of April” from 2003 starring Katie Holmes as the quirky and rebellious April Burns, who lives with her boyfriend in a low-rent New York City apartment miles away from her emotionally distant family. But when she discovers that her mother played by Patricia Clarkson has a fatal form of breast cancer, she invites the clan to her place for Thanksgiving. While her father played by Oliver Platt struggles to drive her family into the city, April, an inexperienced cook runs into kitchen trouble and must ask a neighbour for help.
