Cindy Crawford Posing in New York City

12 September 2016

If there was ever a model to command the title “Supermodel” it was Cindy Crawford.

Perhaps thought of more in the 1990s, though her modelling career started long before that decade, Cindy Crawford’s 30 years of success at modelling made her an international celebrity that led to roles in television and film.

During the 1980s and 1990s, Cindy Crawford was among the most popular supermodels and a ubiquitous presence on magazine covers, runways, and in fashion campaigns. She was repeatedly and frequently featured on the cover of many magazines, including Vogue, W, People, Harper's Bazaar, Elle, Cosmopolitan, and Allure. A partial count in 1998 totalled over 500 appearances. Crawford has walked the runways for Chanel, Versace, Dolce & Gabbana, Christian Dior, Calvin Klein, Ralph Lauren, Michael Kors, Todd Oldham, DKNY, and Valentino. Crawford also appeared in many fashion campaigns during her career, including those for Versace, Calvin Klein, Escada, David Yurman, Oscar De La Renta, Balmain, Hermes, Ellen Tracy, Valentino, Bally, Liz Claiborne, Hervé Leger, Halston, Anne Klein, Isaac Mizrahi, Blumarine, Guess, Ink, Gap, and Revlon. She has also worked for Omega, Maybelline, Clairol, Pepsi, and Chilean retail stores Ripley.

In an issue of Vogue magazine in 1990, Cindy Crawford posed in New York City wearing only a swimsuit whilst pushing a vintage style pram through a street of onlookers. This week, otsoNY tracked that very spot where the model once stood which was at the corner of Wooster Street and Prince Street. Very little has changed in this area since the photograph was taken, and as always special thanks to Bob Egan for providing the location images.

Wooster Street is a street in SoHo, Manhattan that runs north from Canal Street to West Houston in New York City. The street is named after an American Revolutionary War General, David Wooster, and is home to many boutiques, restaurants and cultural institutions such as The Wooster Group, an experimental theater company based at the Performing Garage at 33 Wooster Street.
